Ginger Thomas — formally known as Tecoma stans — are flowers distinguished by bright yellow blossoms. The bursts of “floral sunshine” bloom in trumpet-like shapes. Not surprisingly, Ginger Thomas also is known as yellow trumpet bush, as well as yellow bell, and yellow elder.

Although not native to the West Indies, Ginger Thomas found a welcoming home in the Caribbean, flourishing throughout the islands of St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix. Despite originating in the American Southwest, Ginger Thomas was selected as the Official Flower of the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Over the generations, leaves of the Ginger Thomas have been used as natural remedies by Virgin Islanders to treat fevers, headaches, high blood pressure and to help fight diabetes.

Visually, in addition to brilliant yellow coloration, the flowers form naturally into beautiful clusters — much like a bouquet.
