Meet Coach John Hairston, USPTR

Tennis Pro In-Residence at Flamboyan Resort

Flamboyan On The Bay — “The friendliest resort complex in paradise” — has gone the extra mile to ensure island residents and visitors get to make the most of the property’s newly refurbished lighted tennis courts.

In addition to providing day and night access to the courts, the resort is proud to introduce Tennis Pro In-Residence, Coach John Hairston, USPTR.

Affectionately known throughout the community as “Coach John,” he is founder of Match Point Tennis. The St. Thomas-based program offers junior players a platform to enjoy sports activities. 

Additionally, Coach John offers individual and group lessons for youngsters, teens and adults of all abilities and levels of accomplishment. 

An island resident since 2016, Coach John holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise and Sport Science from Coastal Carolina University.

For the last four years, he held the post of JV/Varsity Soccer Coach and Exercise Science Instructor at the Virgin Islands Montessori School & Peter Gruber International Academy.

Prior to relocating to St. Thomas, he was the Tennis Pro and Program Assistant for the City of Myrtle Beach Tennis Center, Head Varsity Tennis Coach at Myrtle Beach High School, Recreation Assistant and Fitness Instructor at the City of Myrtle Beach Department of Education, and in 2013, he was the Tennis Pro at The Grand Dunes in Myrtle Beach.

In addition to professional sports, he is also an accomplished musician.

In his personal life, Coach John and his wife, Darian, are the proud parents of two sons.

In 2014, Moe’s Fresh Market in Red Hook opened to rave reviews. SPOTLIGHTING THE LATE CYRIL E. KING (1921- 1978)

Cyril Emmanuel King was born on St. Croix in 1921. In 1949 he was appointed as an aide to Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota, becoming the first African American to serve in the office of a U.S. senator. He was elected to the Virgin Islands Senate in 1972. In 1974, King was elected Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands. He died in office in 1978. In 1984, the Harry S. Truman Airport was renamed Cyril E. King Airport by the Virgin Islands Legislature.
