“Your Medical Home in the Virgin Islands” is the official and decidedly appropriate slogan for Red Hook Family Medical Group. With three convenient offices between the two islands of St. Thomas and St. John, you can count on professional care whether you are an island resident or visitor.

Particularly for travelers far away from their regular physicians, nothing is more reassuring than knowing a full service, multi-award-winning association of seasoned medical practitioners is available for walk-in consultations — just in case a problem should arise.

Established in 1992, Red Hook Family Medical Group is frequently voted Best Medical Practice on St. Thomas by readers of the Virgin Islands Daily News. How comforting!

Medical Director of the group is Siri Akal, MD. Born and raised in Trinidad, Dr. Akal graduated from medical school at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland and began practicing medicine in 1989. The affable physician’s impressive career history includes having served as associate residency director at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami where she trained doctors in family medicine. She went on to become medical director at the same facility where she had completed her residency.

Here in the territory, Dr. Akal focuses her seemingly boundless energies toward improving the overall health and well-being of appreciative patients — and she is surrounded by a team of dedicated practitioners.

Continually updating the practice to serve the needs of an eclectic mix of islanders, vacationers, snowbirds, charter yacht and cruise ship personnel, Dr. Akal advised that services include urgent care, family practice, internal medicine, dermatology, pediatric care, and women’s health.

Also on the team is Scott Hartshorn, MD. The Family Medicine Physician completed his medical degree with honors at the Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine in 1993.

Dr. Hartshorn worked at the Myra Keating Smith Health Center on St. John in 1997, prior to opening Healthcare Connection, a private practice in the territory. When Healthcare Connection closed in 2017. Dr. Hartshorn joined Red Hook Family Medical Group. Dr. Hartshorn is also authorized by the Department of Health & Human Services to treat opioid dependency.
