Resort guests heading into downtown Charlotte Amalie to shop, dine, and explore the fascinating architecture will discover multiple sets of public stairways connecting hilly streets with walkways.

The 99 Steps is among the most distinctive landmarks of this kind. One of many ‘step-streets’ originally built by Danish engineers, the stairs were erected to solve the problem of getting around Charlotte Amalie’s challenging urban terrain.

A considerably shorter set of stairs in the same neighborhood connects Garden Street with Government Hill. Halfway up those steps, you will find Sammiches, a fun new place to enjoy breakfast, lunch, or a coffee break.

Look for a classic blackboard sign at the base of stairs promoting Sammiches and you’re almost there.

Specialty items at Sammiches include house-made soup of the day, fresh salads and sandwiches, comfort food, and local taste treats.

You have a choice of seating on the outdoor patio or relax in the air-conditioned lounge.

Sammiches is owned and operated by longtime island resident Susan Hunter. You can count on Susan and her friendly team to make you feel right at home.

While you are at Sammiches, be sure to check out the whimsical displays, handwritten quote of the day, and other old-school charms.

Sammiches is open Monday through Friday
from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. and provides free Wifi for patrons.
